Common issues with farm ponds and water in general is that it’s hard to keep them clean.  As ponds age they can stagnate and will show warning signs such as pond algae and weeds, smelling like rotten eggs, sudden fish kills, a build up of sediment and sludge on the bottom, and become murky looking. Farmers are particularly concerned with blue green algae forming in their ponds as should all of us. Blue Green algae thrives in stagnated ponds. This form of algae is toxic and can kill cattle and humans for that matter if ingested.

Pond stagnation can be even more challenging in the hot summer months or very cold winter months when the pond freezes over. Both of these times of year oxygen is at its lowest levels in farm ponds and if the pond is is being used for irrigation or cattle watering then pond aeration is considered critical.
